Know How Much Noise Reduction You Need — And Why Ear Wax Plays a Role

In many workplaces — from construction sites and factories to airports and music venues — protecting your hearing is non-negotiable. But while noise reduction ratings (NRR) are often emphasised, there’s one overlooked factor that can quietly compromise your hearing protection: ear wax buildup.

Whether you’re using foam earplugs, earmuffs, or custom-molded devices, getting the right level of noise reduction only works when your ears — and your hearing gear — are in sync.

Noise Reduction Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is a measure of how much sound a hearing protection device can block. But how much do you need?

  • Moderate noise (85–90 dB): Think landscaping, loud conversations, or busy offices — often needs basic ear protection.
  • High noise (90–105+ dB): Think heavy machinery, concerts, or power tools — requires stronger, properly fitted protection.
  • Extreme noise (105+ dB): Shooting ranges, jet engines, or jackhammers — may need dual protection (earplugs + earmuffs).

But here’s the catch: Even the best-rated protection fails if it’s not worn correctly — or if ear wax gets in the way.
